About American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO)

The American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) is the oldest non-profit (501c3) and leading grassroots youth soccer program in the country. For 60 years, AYSO has given kids the opportunity to be introduced to the beautiful game of soccer.

AYSO was the first organization to give female athletes an equal opportunity in sports, predating Title IX.

VISION:
To provide world class youth soccer programs that enrich children’s lives.

MISSION:
Develop and deliver quality youth soccer programs which promote a fun, family environment based on AYSO’s Six Philosophies.

AYSO REGIONS

AYSO Regions are community-run soccer programs, essentially local soccer clubs. They can have less than a hundred players or several thousand! Each Region is run by a volunteer Regional Commissioner and a volunteer Regional Board. Regions are responsible for recruiting volunteers to coach and referee, running practices and games, finding and allocating field space, facilitating registration, managing finances, and parent communication.

AYSO Regions are commonly referred to as our Core Program. Teams are formed and match schedules created by player age groups.

AYSO's Mission & Vision:

Vision Statement: To provide world class youth soccer programs that enrich children’s lives.

Mission Statement: To develop and deliver quality youth soccer programs which promote a fun, family environment based on AYSO's Six Philosophies.

These Six Philosophies are principles that separate AYSO from other sports organizations. These tenets were created to provide a positive, fair and fun soccer experience for all our players.

Everyone Plays®

AYSO’s goal is for kids and adults to play soccer, so we mandate that every player on every team must play at least 50 percent of every game.

Balanced Teams

Each year we form new teams as evenly balanced as possible, providing a stronger learning experience for teams as they play teams comprised of similar ability. It also allows for each player to experience playing with a wide variety of teammates of different skill levels.

Open Registration

If you want to play soccer, AYSO welcomes you and gives all youth and adults the opportunity to register and play.

Positive Coaching

A coach can be one of the most influential people in a player’s life, so AYSO requires they create a positive experience for every player in AYSO. Additionally, encouraging player’s effort leads to greater enjoyment, improved skills and stronger motivation in players.

Good Sportsmanship

We strive to create a positive environment based on mutual respect rather than a win-at-all-costs attitude, and our programs are designed to instill good sportsmanship in every facet of AYSO.

Player Development

All players should be able to develop their soccer skills and knowledge to the best of their abilities, both individually and as members of a team, to maximize their enjoyment of the game.

American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) is a nonprofit and the oldest national youth soccer program in the United States. Beginning with only nine teams by a handful of soccer enthusiasts, AYSO was established in 1964 out of a garage in Torrance, California, in an effort to ensure that American kids have the opportunity to be introduced to the beautiful game of soccer.

AYSO now has thriving programs for kids and adults in nearly 900 communities all over the country, over eight million AYSO alumni, and a name that’s recognized nationwide.

AYSO Kids Zone

At AYSO, we want all players, coaches, families and volunteers to have fun!
That’s where AYSO Kids Zone comes in.

Kids Zone is a special program that encourages all in attendance, from the sidelines to the field, to use positive language, demonstrate good sportsmanship, and create a great experience and positive environment for every player. Kids Zone is a reminder that the AYSO soccer fields are a safe, friendly, happy, place for children to play and experience the joy of soccer without fear of judgement.

style=By attending an AYSO event, parents and spectators are asked to agree to the following guidelines:

  1. Kids are #1!
  2. Fun – not winning – is everything
  3. Practice proper physical distancing
  4. Set a proper example of sportsmanship
  5. Players Play, Fans cheer and Coaches coach
  6. Respect the volunteer referees…we couldn’t do it without them!
  7. No yelling, swearing or abusive behavior
  8. No weapons, alcohol, tobacco or drugs
  9. Leave no trash behind
  10. Celebrate the player – win or lose

Everyone Plays®

AYSO practices good sportsmanship.
We believe fun should be had by every child on the field – even those on the opposing team. Everyone Plays® means supporting everyone, whether they win or lose. It means honoring the game – not the outcome of the game.

Remember it's for the kids!
MSNBC has a great article on this, "Being a Good Sports Parent".
